Hollywood Eclectic

This magnificent home from the golden age of Hollywood had great bones but desperately needed an update. Naturalwalls worked with the new owner to re-imagine the spaces and install a custom formulated interior wall finish that accents the massive feeling of the structure while keeping the spaces warm and inviting.

Natural stone was used in the kitchen as a backdrop for the stove. A barrel vaulted ceiling was constructed as a nod to the grand history of the building.

Details such as this iron grated window are what give these old buildings their charm. Naturalwalls created a plaster finish that could be applied in a thick, undulating manner to add character to the interior surfaces.

The palette was kept neutral with an eclectic blend of old and new elements to give an understated but funky vibe.

Stain glass windows in a long hallway create a glowing walk between bedrooms in the afternoon.

The children’s bedrooms are playful with some extra dashes of color.

The exterior is finished with an earthy texture and colorwash.  An interesting mix of plantings and furniture continues the eclectic theme of the interior.

The walls are finished with American Clay in a custom color and earthy texture that softens the feel of the room’s clean lines and accents the gorgeous accessories including a Japanese made wood bathtub set in river stones.  The floors are finished with an integral color cement coating.

The sink was created by Advanced Concrete Enhancement and features two bowls and waterfall fixtures.

Shoji screens were installed to integrate the doorway to the walk-in closet.

Hawk & Trowel magazine interviews Scott Nelson on natural lime plasters.

Hawk & Trowel magazine interviewed Scott and other industry professionals in an article entitled “Venetian Plaster: Lime vs. Synthetic”.

Many people in California think of Venetian Plaster as the smooth, glassy finish that is obtained with multiple layers of natural lime putty and marble dust.  The term can actually refer to a wide variety of finishes, all of them incorporating varying amounts of natural lime plaster and stone aggregates.

The beauty of natural lime plaster is its versatility in creating almost any surface imaginable.  ”When I am looking to bring a sense of warmth and earthy character to a space, I often specify the use of natural plaster.  I pay particular attention to the size, structure, and color of the aggregates that are to be used in the desired finish.  It’s these qualities and the artistry of the application that will create the feel that I am imagining.”

Brentwood Art Collector

Naturalwalls oversaw the installation of polished lime plaster in large, sun bathed spaces filled with art and high design. The effect of the light shimmering across the polished two story walls was stunning, and check out this powder room!

To get this effect we applied a black lime putty and marble dust plaster in multiple translucent coats and then trowelled on a layer of wax mixed with metallic pigments. It’s about the only finish that I can imagine that can stand up to that glowing agate sink!

The other spaces of the house are more neutral and subtle to provide a fitting backdrop for the art.

Polished lime plaster
was developed centuries ago as a way to attain the elegant surface of a stone wall without the weight and risk of installing huge slabs of marble.

Plaster finishes are a perfect complement to minimal modern art where the earthiness of the surface contrasts with the sleek feel of manufactured pieces.

Tuscan Style in the Malibu hills

Naturalwalls assisted Landry Design partner Brian Pinkett in the realization of his desire to create an earthy abode for his family.

The client was looking to use the most authentic materials and process possible for the exterior of the his home.  Scott Nelson oversaw the installation of St. Astier Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) which has been valued for centuries in many parts of the world for its durability and beauty.

NHL is composed of crushed limestone and during the curing process it returns to its natural state which yields a crack resistant, vapor permeable building envelope that will last for decades and contains none of the harmful, synthetic compounds that are found in many PVC based stuccos.

After the final layer of plaster had been applied, a fresco process was used to create the aged appearance that is such a charming aspect of many old European buildings.  Unlike a faux finish, the process ensures that the pigmentation is completely integrated into the wall surface and will allow the building to further develop in character with the passage of time.

Naturalwalls was hired as the consultant and installer of lime and clay plasters for a recent project by architect Mark Mack and builder Al Oligino.

“We used a colorwashed, natural lime plaster for the exterior to enhance the vibrancy of the surface.  Mark is known for designing with these very bright color blocks and we came up with a process using old and new techniques to complement his aesthetic.”

The clients wanted a very healthy and cozy interior to keep the ultra-modern architecture inviting.  Scott Nelson oversaw the installation of American Clay plaster on all interior walls and ceilings.  “It’s one of my favorite interior materials because it’s really gives the feeling of bringing nature inside.”
